The history of the Hands-Free Card
The hands-free card, along with numerous other inventions which have revolutionized the way people drive automobiles, was designed as a solution to one specific issue. In this case, the driver had to push the door handle to unlock the doors of their car when they entered their vehicle. To address this problem, the product manager of Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel had an idea. He realised that they could use the key card to enable a range of functions, and he decided that hands-free was the most effective one.
The first cards for hands-free were small and had a simple design: a minimalist plastic case that contained an electronic core which was programmed to communicate continuously with the vehicle it was paired with. When the card was close to the vehicle, it sent a radio signal that contained an access code. The car recognised this, and if the access code was correct, the doors would be unlocked.
The hand-free card contained a microtransmitter which allowed the user to control remotely the horn as well as the lights. This is useful for emergencies or to draw attention when vehicles are parked illegally. The button also allowed the owner to start the engine.
